Day Shade
My persona is based in Thebes, New Kingdom, Egypt. I haven't really narrowed down and exact year yet. I wanted to try to make a day shade as period as possible. Covering an ancient civilization makes that a little difficult. There is actually a surviving piece of an ancient Egyptian tent on display in a museum. It's made of leather. Living in Florida, a leather tent is not an option. I'd stay cooler hanging out inside my dryer.
Unable to find any really great documentation I just searched the world of SCA projects and patterns. That's when I came across these instructions.
Had to move furniture around to find a big enough work area.
Just working with this much material was a challenge. My old Wizard sewing machine went through four layers of canvas like butter.
First time doing flat felled seams. It wasn't too bad because I left myself an inch of seam allowance to work with. Pretty happy with how they came out.
The corners are a large washer, sewn between two layers of canvas, then overcast stitch to keep the material from fraying.
Not bad for the first time!
More day shades are definitely in my future.
What's a day shade without a little ambiance?
